Lockheed Martin unit wins contract to train Norwegian sailors

Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors has been awarded a $10.7 million contract by the Navy to provide training to the crews of Japanese and Norwegian ships equipped with the Aegis Weapon System, which the company develops in Moorestown, N.J.

The unit of Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) will train the Japanese crews at Moorestown or at the Dahlgren, Va., home of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, which awarded the contract. It will train the Norwegian crews in Norway or Dahlgren.

Lockheed Martin is expected to complete the training by March 2012. The company conducts business operations in New Mexico.

The Aegis combat system is an integrated weapons system used by the United States Navy. It is both an integrated single ship system and a ship-to-ship network. The Aegis combat system is one of the most advanced and most capable defense systems currently in use. A total of 108 Aegis-equipped ships have been deployed in five navies worldwide.

Aegis was initially developed by the Missile and Surface Radar Division of RCA, which was then acquired by General Electric. The division responsible for the Aegis systems became Government Electronic Systems. This, and other GE Aerospace businesses, were sold to Martin Marietta in 1992. This became part of Lockheed Martin in 1995.

Because the Aegis combat system is the key component of several cruiser and destroyer class vessels, the ships are often incorrectly referred to as “Aegis class cruisers” or “Aegis class destroyers”. In reality, the radar system and the class of ship it is installed on are unrelated to each other.
